The Government Shutdown

A government shutdown occurs when congress fails to reach an agreement on federal funding. When this happens, all non-essential agencies and departments close. Employees of these programs are told not to come to work and will not receive pay until a resolution is reached. Examples of “essential” agencies that will remain open include: the military, Social Security, the U.S. Postal Service, and the Transportation Security Administration.

The current 2018 shutdown is a result of the congressional dispute over immigration laws. Specifically, Democrats are in favor of a of bill that would offer protection to immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, yet remain unauthorized. These persons are eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The Trump Administration has plans to end DACA. The democrats in favor of this program refused to support the extension of government spending until a solution for the protection of immigrants was put in place. As a result, the government funding bill did not receive enough votes, invoking a government shutdown.
