National Medal of Honor Day

On March 25, 1863 the first Medals of Honor were presented, signifying the highest military decoration in the United States. Six members of Andrew’s Raiders received a Medal of Honor for their participation in an American Civil War raid dubbed the “Great Locomotive Chase”.

Since that day, more than 3,400 Medals of Honor have been presented to our nation’s bravest military personnel. These individuals have distinguished themselves “conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of [his/her] life above and beyond the call of duty.” There are currently 71 living recipients.
